Perry and I escaped down to Disney this past summer for a few days of fun and magic. He is certainly my child and inherited my bent for setting goals, making lists, and checking things of said lists.
We decided to bring a little competitive park touring into our trip. Given the fact that he is still not quite tall enough to ride every single thing we got creative with our goals and made them about more than just “ride every ride.”
My favorite day of our trip was the day we spent in Magic Kingdom connecting with Walt himself and doing what we have been affectionately calling the “Opening Day Challenge.”

Essentially the premise here is that we spent the day in Magic Kingdom experiencing every attraction that was open on the park’s opening day – October 1, 1971. Sadly there are a number of attractions that have since closed or changed – but there is still plenty of opening day magic to experience. It was hard not to take a hard right turn and run to Space Mountain (our family favorite ride) – but we stuck to the plan and checked everything off our Opening Day Magic Kingdom list.
We did some things we have honestly never noticed before – like the Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade. And Perry absolutely loved it, Pretty sure he could have spent half a day there. All in all, it was an awesome day of timeless Disney fun with my boy!
Challenges are an awesome way to add some new excitement to park touring if you are a frequent Disney World visitor. Have you ever done a Disney Parks challenge? What should we try and do next time?
